Community Engagement

Soro-Bindi Performances and Teaching in Schools:

For more than a decade, I have devoted myself to the role of a passionate teaching and performing artist within Arts for Learning Connecticut (AFLCT), an esteemed organization that brings the transformative power of arts education to diverse settings across the state of Connecticut. Throughout this remarkable journey, I have had the privilege of participating in over 200 captivating performances and leading numerous immersive dance residencies in K-12 schools, public libraries, recreational parks, and community centers. Within these dynamic engagements, I have had the opportunity to share the rich and multifaceted culture of Ghana, igniting the imaginations of audiences spanning various ages and backgrounds. Utilizing the universal languages of music, dance, and storytelling, I have taken on the profound role of an educator, both inspiring and cultivating informed global citizens who possess deep respect and appreciation for cultural diversity. Through the rhythmic beats, vibrant movements, and enchanting narratives of Ghanaian dance, I aim to instill in students and audiences a sense of curiosity, empathy, and cultural awareness. By creating a space that transcends cultural boundaries and fosters intercultural understanding, I empower individuals to embrace their own bodies, identities, and unique contributions through the medium of dance. Together, we embark on a creative journey, envisioning and co-creating the worlds in which we aspire to live.

Within the realm of arts education, I recognize the immense potential for transformation and growth. Through my work with AFLCT, I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact that the arts can have on individuals, communities, and society. I have seen students’ eyes light up with excitement as they engage in the rhythms and movements of West African dance, their bodies becoming vehicles for self-expression and personal empowerment. I have witnessed the transformative power of the arts in fostering a sense of belonging, as diverse groups of individuals come together to create something beautiful and meaningful. In addition to nurturing a love for the arts and cultural understanding, my endeavors as a teaching and performing artist with AFLCT serve a larger purpose. They contribute to the development of informed global citizens who possess the skills and perspectives necessary to navigate an increasingly interconnected world. By celebrating cultural diversity and promoting empathy, I strive to foster a spirit of inclusivity and understanding among students and audiences. Through the exploration of different cultural traditions, we gain insights into the experiences, histories, and perspectives of others, ultimately nurturing a more compassionate and harmonious society.

Ultimately, my journey as a teaching and performing artist with Arts for Learning Connecticut has been marked by a deep commitment to sharing the vibrant culture of Ghana and promoting cultural understanding. Through music, dance, and storytelling, I have nurtured the growth of informed global citizens, empowering individuals to embrace their bodies, identities, and the possibilities that lie within. Together, we envision and co-create the world we hope to inhabit – a world that celebrates diversity, fosters empathy, and values the transformative power of the arts.
